Wangapeka Family Dairy

It's a Family Business at Wangapeka

Karen and Daryl Trafford are the owners of Wangapeka Family Dairy—a truly family business.

Wangapeka Family Dairy - its a family business - artisan cheeses

A few years ago, Karen was asked to provide fresh milk for a cheese-making course. The enthusiastic comments on the flavour and quality of the milk, and the interest in the farming practices that resulted in such a superior product, spurred Karen and Daryl to move in a new direction.

Both from dairy, sheep- and beef-farming backgrounds, they had been milking cows for Fonterra for 22 years before deciding to pursue a new approach to farming and food. With the goal of developing a holistic farm-to-market dairy business, they’ve found that the key to success is being hands on with everything from pasture to finished product.

Karen and Daryl’s daughter Rennae is a key member of the team, taking responsibility for marketing and product development among other things.

Meet the Family

The visionary. Karen’s aim is to produce milk that’s ‘the best of the best’. Passionate about her holistic approach to farming, food production, pasture health and animal welfare-Karen's goal is to capture these four visions and bring them to your plate with an artisan flair. Karen is hands on in the factory as "Cheesemaker Extraordinaire" and creates an array of beautiful cheeses.

"Boss Man", Daryl manages and milks the herd as well as overseeing the general running of the farm- as Wangapeka's philosophy starts from the soil and pasture up- this is no small feat. You'll also find Daryl out and about at The Nelson Market on Saturdays.

Marketing, product development and business management are Rennae's domain, and she's also responsible for the all-important areas of food safety and quality control. Rennae is currently taking some time out to be a first-time mum to a bonny baby boy.

A Tapawera local.  Deb joins Karen in the factory using her creative flair as a Cheesemaker.  Deb is also in charge of Distribution to make sure your orders are delivered expediently.  She is passionate about all things cheese.
